Searching for a Taekwondo club in Auckland is harder than it looks. A quick Google search returns dozens of results — but not all clubs are equal. Some are run by genuinely qualified, competition-experienced instructors. Others are recreational programs dressed up with marketing language.
This guide is written by Andrea Kilday — 2016 Rio Olympian, Oceania Gold Medallist, and Head Instructor at Superior Taekwondo. These are the 7 questions you must ask before joining any club, and why each one matters.
1. Is the Instructor Genuinely Qualified?
This is the single most important factor. In New Zealand, anyone can call themselves a Taekwondo instructor. There are no legal requirements for teaching martial arts. That means you need to ask directly:
- What is your Dan grade, and who certified it?
- Are you registered with Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ)?
- Do you have a valid SafeGuarding or coaching certificate?
- Have you competed? At what level?
A 1st Dan with a box-standard coaching certificate and no competition history will give you a very different experience to a 3rd Dan who has qualified for the Olympics. The difference in depth of knowledge is enormous. At Superior Taekwondo, our head instructor competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics — that experience translates directly into every session she teaches.
2. Is It a World Taekwondo (WT) or ITF Club?
There are two main governing bodies: World Taekwondo (WT) — the Olympic federation — and the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF), which is a more traditional, non-Olympic style. The differences matter:
World Taekwondo (WT)
- ✅ Olympic sport (since 2000)
- ✅ Pathway to national ranking & NZ team
- ✅ Electronic scoring & standardised rules
- ✅ Internationally recognised Dan certificates
ITF
- ℹ️ Traditional forms (Tul) emphasis
- ℹ️ Non-Olympic style
- ℹ️ Different sparring rules
- ℹ️ Qualifications not WT-recognised
If you or your child want to compete at a national or international level, or if you want the credential that's recognised globally, you must choose a WT club. Superior Taekwondo is proudly WT-affiliated and our students receive internationally recognised grading certificates.
3. Do They Have Age-Appropriate Classes?
A 5-year-old should not be training in the same class as a 35-year-old adult. The physical, emotional, and developmental needs are completely different. A quality club will have structured classes for:
- Tiny Tigers (4–7 years) — focus on coordination, balance, fun, and listening skills
- Juniors / Kids (8–14 years) — structured technique, discipline, and teamwork
- Teens & Adults (15+) — fitness, sparring, and personal development
- Competition stream — for those pursuing tournaments
At Superior Taekwondo we offer Tiny Tigers, General Taekwondo, Poomsae, Fitness, and a dedicated Competition Team — each with tailored instruction.
4. Is the Pricing Transparent?
Some clubs are vague about costs until after you've signed up. Red flags include:
- No pricing on their website
- Long-term contracts with hefty cancellation fees
- Hidden extras: grading fees, compulsory equipment purchases, mandatory event attendance
At Superior Taekwondo our pricing is fully transparent. We offer weekly rates, family discounts, and term payment options. Ask any club for a full breakdown before you commit.
5. Can You Visit and Try a Class First?
Every reputable club will offer a free trial class. If a club refuses this, that is a significant red flag. A trial class lets you observe the instructor's communication style, the training atmosphere, how students treat each other, and whether the facility is clean and safe. We offer free trial classes at all three of our locations — Helensville, Kaukapakapa, and Waimauku. No pressure, no obligation.
6. What Is Their Competition Track Record?
For parents whose children are interested in competition, a club's track record speaks volumes. Ask:
- Do your students regularly compete at national level?
- Have any students represented New Zealand?
- Does the club attend the TNZ National Championships?
Superior Taekwondo is recognised as Auckland's top competition club. Our head instructor competed at the Olympic Games. That lineage of excellence flows directly into how we coach our competition students.
7. Is the Location Convenient?
Consistency is everything in martial arts. A dojo 45 minutes away might seem fine at first, but after six months you will likely find attendance drops. Choose a club that fits naturally into your routine. Superior Taekwondo trains across three North West Auckland locations specifically so that students from Helensville, Kaukapakapa, Waimauku, Kumeu, Huapai, Riverhead, and Westgate all have a convenient option. Check our class timetable to find the session nearest you.
