What to Expect in Your First Class

The hardest part of Taekwondo is walking through the door for the first time. We've made this guide to remove the mystery.

Before You Arrive

Preparation starts at home. Here is a quick checklist to ensure a smooth start:

  • 1

Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing like gym shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. Avoid zippers or buttons that could scratch.

  • 2

Feet: Wash your feet! We train barefoot on mats.

  • 3

Jewelry: Remove necklaces, watches, and dangling earrings for safety.

The Class Structure

Most classes at Superior Taekwondo follow a standard 60-minute format.

Warm-up (10-15 mins)

Jogging, jumping jacks, and dynamic stretching to get the blood flowing and prevent injury.

Basics (15-20 mins)

Practicing fundamental movements. For beginners, this means learning how to stand, punch, and do a basic front kick.

Activity / Drills (15-20 mins)

Pad work! You’ll get to kick cushions held by a partner. This is usually the most fun part.

Warm-down (5 mins)

Static stretching and breathing exercises to finish the session.

Common Fears vs Reality

The Fear

"I will look stupid and uncoordinated."

The Reality

"Everyone looks uncoordinated on day one. Even Black Belts started here. We celebrate effort, not perfection."

The Fear

"I'm not fit enough."

The Reality

"You don't get fit to do Taekwondo; you do Taekwondo to get fit. Go at your own pace."

First Class FAQs

Do I need a uniform for my first class?

No. You can wear comfortable workout clothes (t-shirt and track pants or shorts). We will organize a uniform for you once you decide to join officially.

Will I have to spar on day one?

Absolutely not. Sparring is an advanced skill. Your first few classes will focus on basic movements, balance, and having fun.

What should I bring?

Bring a water bottle and a positive attitude! We train barefoot, so no special shoes are needed.
