General Class

The complete Taekwondo experience. Technique, sparring, fitness, and community — for teenagers and adults ready to commit to something extraordinary.

You do not need a reason to start Taekwondo. You just need to start.

The General Class at Superior Taekwondo is the heart of what we do. It is where beginners take their first steps, where intermediate students sharpen their skills, and where experienced practitioners continue to grow. It is a space built on respect, challenge, and community.

Every class is structured to deliver progress across all four pillars of Taekwondo: striking and kicking technique, Poomsae (patterns), sparring, and physical conditioning. Over time, these pillars reinforce each other — better technique makes sparring more effective, conditioning makes technique sharper, and patterns build the mechanical foundation for everything else.

Our General Class is for teenagers and adults across the full belt spectrum. Whether you are lacing up a dobok for the first time or returning to Taekwondo after years away, you will find a class designed to meet you exactly where you are. We run classes across our locations in Helensville, Kaukapakapa, and Waimauku — check the class schedule for times near you.

What Every Class Includes

🔥

Warm-Up & Mobility

Every session begins with dynamic warm-up routines developed to prepare joints and muscles for the demands of Taekwondo. Mobility work is incorporated from day one, gradually improving flexibility without injury risk.

🥋

Fundamental Techniques

Stances, blocks, punches, and the full range of Taekwondo kicks — from the essential front kick to spinning heel kicks. Beginners learn from the ground up; advanced students refine mechanics and timing.

📐

Poomsae (Patterns)

Each belt level has a corresponding Taegeuk pattern that must be mastered for grading. Pattern training is integrated into every class and deepens technical understanding.

Combination Drills

Real Taekwondo happens in sequences, not single techniques. We drill multi-technique combinations with partners using pads and mitts, developing timing, accuracy, and power generation.

🛡️

Controlled Sparring

Introduced progressively based on readiness. Students begin with pre-arranged sparring scenarios, advancing to freestyle sparring with full protective gear as confidence and skill develop.

💪

Conditioning & Cool-Down

Class endings include functional conditioning (core, legs, agility) and a structured cool-down with stretching. Fitness is a by-product of great Taekwondo training, not an add-on.

Your Belt Progression Path

Progression through the belt system is measured and celebrated. Each rank represents a genuine increase in technical and personal development. There is no shortcutting the process — and that is what makes each belt meaningful.

White Belt

Begin your journey. Learn fundamental stances, basic kicks and blocks, and Taegeuk 1 pattern. No prior experience needed.

Yellow Belt

Build on foundations. Develop power and coordination. Introduce basic sparring concepts and more complex combinations.

Green Belt

Technique becomes more fluid. Sparring increases in complexity. Poomsae precision is emphasized in preparation for grading.

Blue Belt

Mid-way milestone. Strategy enters the sparring conversation. Techniques become more diverse and combinations more sophisticated.

Red Belt

Advanced practitioner. Sparring is dynamic and purposeful. Students begin to develop their own fighting style and personal strengths.

Black Belt

A beginning, not an end. Black belt represents the foundation from which true mastery begins. Advanced patterns, leadership, and continued refinement.

For Every Stage of Life

Teenagers (13+)

Build athletic discipline at a critical developmental age. Taekwondo develops physical confidence, respect for others, and the ability to set and reach goals — skills that shape character for life.

Young Adults

Channel energy into purposeful training. Build functional fitness, real-world self-defense awareness, and a community of people who take their health and growth seriously.

Parents Returning to Training

Many of our adult students return to martial arts after a decade away. We meet you where you are and build from there — no ego, no pressure, genuine progress.

Over 40s

Taekwondo is one of the best full-body activities for maintaining strength, flexibility, cognitive sharpness, and social connection into later life. You are never too old to start.

Our Commitment to You

We take our responsibility as coaches seriously. When you join our General Class, you are not just buying access to a training space — you are joining a community with coaches who genuinely care about your progress.

We will tell you the truth about your development. We will celebrate your improvements and address your weaknesses directly, because honest feedback is the fastest path to real growth. We will not flatter you or rush your grading for revenue.

We are aligned with World Taekwondo (WT) and Taekwondo New Zealand (TNZ) — meaning every grade you earn is nationally and internationally recognised. Your progress goes with you, wherever life takes you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age group is the General Class for?

The General Class is for teenagers (roughly 13+) and adults of all ages. We regularly have students in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond. There is no upper age limit — Taekwondo is a lifelong pursuit.

Do I need to be fit to start?

No. We build your fitness as part of the process. Every class includes warm-up, conditioning, and cool-down components tailored to the group's level. You will improve your fitness naturally over weeks and months.

Do I need any prior martial arts experience?

Not at all. The General Class is designed to welcome complete beginners and continue developing experienced practitioners simultaneously. Our coaches are skilled at individualising instruction within group settings.

Will I have to spar?

Sparring is introduced gradually and is never forced. Beginner students start with non-contact drills. Full-contact sparring with protective gear is introduced once a student has developed sufficient confidence and technique.

How long before I earn my first belt?

Most students complete their first grading after approximately 3 months of regular attendance. The colour belt progression continues roughly every 3–4 months with consistent training and grading preparation.

Can I train if I have an injury or physical limitation?

In many cases, yes. Please discuss any injuries or limitations with our coaches before your first class. We modify training plans where possible and work within your capabilities safely.
